The story of the Bible is the story of a God who desires to dwell with His people. From Eden to the New Jerusalem, His heart has always been, “I will dwell among them.” In the Old Testament, God’s presence rested in the Temple, a holy place where heaven touched earth. Yet over time, the people neglected that sacred place. Idolatry, impurity, and spiritual compromise filled the temple, the doors were shut, and the lamps went out. As the temple was defiled, God’s presence departed, and the nation suffered. This mirrors the spiritual drift many believers experience today. Prayer fades, God’s Word is neglected, and the heart becomes crowded with fear, distraction, and hidden sin. But the stories of King Hezekiah and King Josiah reveal God’s pattern for revival. They reopened the temple, removed the filth, restored worship, and returned to the Word of God. Their repentance brought joy, healing, and renewed fellowship with God. Through Jesus Christ, everything changed. He became the true Temple, and through His death and resurrection the veil separating humanity from God was torn apart. Now, under the New Covenant, believers themselves are the temple of the Holy Spirit. As Scripture says in 1 Corinthians 6:19, “Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you.” Because we are God’s dwelling place, we must guard and cleanse our hearts. Prayer, obedience, repentance, and love keep the temple spiritually alive. God is not looking for a perfect heart, but a willing one. No matter how broken the ruins may seem, He is the Master Architect who restores what has been neglected. The King is standing at the door. The question is simple: will you make room for Him?
