True Humility

True humility is complete dependence on our Creator God and staying continually connected with Him. In John 15:4–5, Jesus said, “Just as a branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you unless you remain in Me… apart from Me you can do nothing.” To remain in God is true humility; seeking independence from Him is the very mark of pride.

This truth is reflected throughout creation itself. A fish can survive only in water — its humility lies in remaining within its source (Genesis 1:20–23). Likewise, a seed cannot sprout in the air; it needs the soil to grow (Genesis 1:11). We human beings, created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), can discover our true identity and purpose only when we stay connected to Him. Therefore, humility means drawing near to God and depending entirely upon Him.

Pride, on the other hand, drives people away from God. The proud do not seek Him (Psalm 10:4). Lucifer fell because of pride when he desired to separate himself from his Creator (Isaiah 14:12–15). Scripture warns, “Pride goes before destruction” (Proverbs 16:18). King Nebuchadnezzar also learned this lesson when God humbled him so that everyone might know that the Most High rules over all kingdoms of men (Daniel 4:17–37).

The Bible instructs us: “Clothe yourselves with humility… humble yourselves under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time” (1 Peter 5:5–6). Neglecting prayer is a subtle form of pride, but a life devoted to prayer demonstrates our trust and dependence on God.

Ultimately, humility is acknowledging God’s supreme authority, depending completely on Him, and remaining closely united with Him.
